Moving day is busy, but a few checks can save confusion later. Take photos, note meter readings, test the essentials and make sure everyone in the home knows where important controls are.
This guide is designed for the first hour in a property, before boxes and furniture hide the things you need to see.
Before unpacking
Take clear photos of each room, including walls, floors, windows, appliances and any marks already present. Keep these with your move-in records.
Check that supplied furniture and appliances match what you expected, and make a note of anything damaged, missing or not working.
Meters and utilities
Take gas and electricity meter readings if you have access. Photograph the readings with the date visible if possible, and identify where the fuse board and water stop tap are.
Check heating, hot water, taps, toilets, showers and main appliances. If something does not work, report it with photos or a short video.
First-night safety
Check keys in the doors they are meant to open, make sure windows close securely, and confirm escape routes are clear. Test alarms only using the test button where accessible.
