A small toolkit can help with simple tasks such as measuring, tightening a loose screw in your own furniture, changing batteries or assembling a flat-pack item.
It is not a licence to alter the property, open electrical fittings or take apart plumbing. If in doubt, report the issue first.
Useful basics
Useful items include a torch, tape measure, small screwdriver set, pliers, adjustable spanner, radiator key, gloves, spare batteries and a small spirit level.
Keep a note of where the stop tap, fuse board and boiler controls are. Knowing the controls is often more useful than having more tools.
What not to attempt
Do not open electrical fittings, remove boiler covers, alter gas appliances, dismantle fixed plumbing, drill into unknown walls or make permanent changes without permission.
Any job involving wiring, gas, leaks, structure, locks, glazing or supplied appliances should be reported.
Storing tools safely
Store tools in a dry box away from children, pets and busy shared areas. Keep blades covered and batteries separate from loose metal items.
In a shared house, agree where basic items live so they do not disappear when someone needs them quickly.
