Small picture-pin holes can often be made tidy with careful filling, but larger damage, damp, crumbling plaster or matching paint can be more complicated than it first appears.
This guide is for minor cosmetic holes only. Report anything that looks structural, damp or beyond a neat touch-up.
Check the size
Small pin or picture-hook holes are different from deep gouges, loose plaster, drilled holes, cracks or damaged corners. If the surface is soft, damp or moving, do not fill over it.
Take a photo before starting if you are unsure, especially near the end of a tenancy.
Fill and smooth
Clean away loose dust, apply a small amount of suitable filler, and press it into the hole. Smooth it level rather than leaving a raised patch.
Allow it to dry fully before gently sanding. Rushing this step usually leaves a visible mark.
Touch-up limits
Paint matching can be difficult, especially on older or sun-faded walls. A small patch may still be visible if the colour or finish is not exact.
Do not repaint whole walls or decorate without agreement. If damage is more than minor, report it and ask what is preferred.
